Stephanie Thomas has been a Consultant Clinical Microbiologist at UHSM since 2010 and is the Departmental Lead for Decontamination. Her main clinical interests include management of patients undergoing Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for severe respiratory failure and management of complex vascular infections. Her other interests include the spread of antimicrobial resistance – particularly related to Carbapenem resistance in Gram-negative bacilli.
She gained an Honours degree in Biochemistry with Microbiology from St. Andrews University, Scotland before moving to Dundee University to study Medicine. In order to pursue her interest in laboratory medicine she moved to the North West of England (Manchester), to complete Specialist Registrar training in clinical Microbiology and Virology. During this time she completed a Masters degree in Diagnostic and Medical Virology at the University of Manchester and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
